Abstract
540,301. Two-stroke oil engines; valves. RICARDO, H. R. April 10, 1940, No. 6491. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke compression ignition engine in which fuel is injected into a combustion chamber E in the cylinder head, an exhaust port in the wall of the combustion chamber is controlled by a "masked" poppet valve G which is timed to close before the piston covers air-inlet ports B<SP>1</SP> on the instroke, so that air supplied by a pump H through a passage K and the ports B<SP>1</SP> continues to enter the cylinder after the exhaust is closed. After the ports B<SP>1</SP> are closed, air continues to be delivered past a rotary valve L into the passage K, where it is stored for use in scavenging on the succeeding stroke. The masking of the valve G is obtained by forming the valve with a cylindrical part G3 which enters a corresponding recess F<SP>3</SP> in the valve seating, and is preferably such that the valve moves for 1/6 - 1/12 of its total lift before the port is effectively opened. The combustion chamber is a figure of revolution about the cylinder axis, and has a mouth E<SP>1</SP> which is less than the maximum diameter of the chamber, but greater than the diameter of the valve, so that the latter can be inserted therethrough. In a modification, the combustion chamber is cylindrical. Specification 125,659, [Class 7 (vi)], is referred to as describing a masked valve.
