Four-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, arrangement of ports in. - A hollow cylindrical slide valve A controls exhaust and inlet ports d, c, both of which are overrun by the working piston. During the suction stroke, the exhaust port d is closed, and the charge enters when the piston has travelled two-thirds of the stroke and uncovers the port c. During the compression stroke, part of the charge is returned through the port c until the piston overruns this port. The valve-actuating crank may be retarded, by means of a sleeved coupling on its shaft, so that the exhaust port d remains open during the first part of the suction stroke, and exhaust gases are drawn into the cylinder. A smaller live charge is then drawn in but the compression remains the same.
