Abstract

19,036. Slaughter, T. Aug. 25. Four-stroke-cycle engines.-A single oscillating sleeve valve surrounding the cylinder controls the admission of charges to the crank case and the transfer of these charges after compression to the combustion chambers of both four-stroke-cycle super-compression engines and two-stroke-cycle engines. The valve may also control the exhaust. Fig. 1 shows a four-strokecycle engine. The valve 4 is arranged between the cylinder 2 and the outside air or watercooled casing 5 bolted to the cylinder head and crank chamber respectively. The valve is rocked through a T-lever pivoted at 23 by levers 17, 18 and cams 17, 18, one of which revolves at twice the speed of the other. During the suction stroke, mixture enters the combustion chamber through the port 6 while mixture previously drawn into the crank chamber through the port 7 is compressed and enters at the end of the stroke through the by-pass port 10. A charge of air enters the crank chamber through the port 9 during the compression stroke and is admitted to the cylinder for scavenging at the end of the exhaust stroke. The exhaust port may be controlled by the valve 28 or by the valve 4. A throttle valve may be fitted in the admission passage between the two gas-ports 6, 7 so that the crank-case admission may be cut off if it is desired to work on the ordinary four-stroke cycle. In this case, a crank-case relief valve may be fitted and opened when the throttle is closed. The throttle may be worked by hand or by a governor. The lower gas-port 7 may be cut out altogether and air admitted to the crank chamber at every revolution, the ordinary charge being heavily carburetted, or again the air-port may be dispensed -with. In a modified four-stroke engine, there are two inlet valves one of which is automatic and opens into the top of the cylinder, while the other is mechanically operated and opens into the closed outer end of the cylinder by way of the by-pass. The usual exhaust valve is fitted, and also a non- return air inlet for the outer closed end of the cylinder. The sleeve valve may be applied to a two-stroke-cycle engine, and be provided with ports for admission to crank case, by-pass to cylinder, and with exhaust ports.
