Abstract

Valves; valve-gear.-A sleeve valve F is reciprocated by frictional contact with the piston D, its movement being limited by a pair of grooved cams G<1> mounted on the crank shaft and engaging extensions F<1> of the valve. Rollers on the extensions F<1> have sufficient play in the grooves to allow the movement of the sleeve to be effected by the piston. The valve is formed with an inlet port f and exhaust ports f<1>, f<2>. The piston D controls inlet ports H, exhaust ports J<1>, and grooves a in the cylinder. The sleeve works between an outer casing C and the water jacket B. According to the Provisional Specification, the sleeve may have a flange or piston for withdrawing the gases from the cylinder, and it may be outside the water jacket. When ignition occurs, the inlet ports H are covered by the piston and may serve to hold a supplementary charge, which is admitted as soon as the ports H are uncovered, to provide a second explosion. On its out-stroke, the piston uncovers the exhaust port J<1>, which is later opened to the exhaust J by the valve port f<1>. The piston then uncovers the grooves a, whereupon the gases in the cylinder are drawn into the chamber K and a fresh charge is induced through the ports f, H. On the in-stroke, the charge is compressed, and the gears in the chamber K are forced out through ports f<2>, j, J.
