Four-stroke-cycle engines; twostroke-cycle engines. - An internal-combustion engine comprises a single cylinder a of two diameters wherein pistons b, b<2> reciprocate which are connected to opposite cranks on a shaft e. A fuel chamber a<3>, of one and a half or twice the capacity of the combustion chamber, is formed in the upper end of the cylinder and has an inlet valve g and an automatic outlet valve b<5> in the piston b<2>. The working chamber has an outlet h<1>, controlled by a valve. The chamber a<3> is charged with mixture during the exhaust, and the charge is compressed and supplied to the centre of the cylinder during the upstroke; during the instrokes of the pistons, the charge is further compressed and then ignited. The valves may be operatel to enable the engine to function as a two-stroke motor.
