Abstract

478,471. Two-stroke engines. FITZGERALD, W. M. B., and RATCLIFFE, T. April 14, 1936, No. 9355/37. Divided out of 478,422. Drawings to Specification. [Class 7 (ii)] In the engine described in Specification 478,422, the underside of the working piston acts as the charging pump, the charging of the combustion chamber 13, which need not however be immovable, from the same, or another cylinder is completed during the working stroke in that cylinder, the charge being held in the chamber 13 prior to ignition, and the entry valve into the duct 11 opens when the pressure therein is reached by the pressure beneath the piston. The fuel may be supplied to the chamber 13 or the duct 11 ; alternatively it may be drawn into the pump with the air. In a radial-cylinder engine the combustion chamber of one cylinder may be charged by the underside of the piston of the next cylinder in the firing order. In a multicylinder engine, in which the cylinders can be divided into pairs firing at intervals of 180‹, each pair may have a common duct 11 connected by valves to the respective chambers 13 and the pump spaces. The engine may be operated with petrol, heavy fuel oil, or gas by cooling the duct 11 as described in Specification 478,422 and compression ratios of from 10 or 16 to 1 may then be attained. It may, however, be operated as a Diesel engine by injecting fuel into the chamber 13 ; the duct 11 is then kept hot by surrounding it with insulating material or exhaust gas. An annular space round the base of a trunk piston may serve as the compression space of the pump.
