Abstract

378,715. Four-stroke engines. TATE, M. H., 12, Denbigh Street, Victoria, London. Nov. 7, 1931, No. 30913. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii).] To raise the pressure of the charge so that it ignites the fuel as it is injected into the cylinder, a portion of the air charge is rejected from the power cylindei on the compression stroke and is delivered to an independent pump g ; this portion is highly compressed therein and returned to the main air charge at the end of the compression stroke. A second pump may draw air from the atmosphere and add its charge to that from the pump g; the two pumps and a fuel pump hare worked together either from the crank shaft or pneumatically by the pressure within the cylinder. The air and the fuel pipe lines may include heater coils e. A spring or dashpot i may be interposed between the air and fuel pumps pistons to give varying movements of these with respect to each other. In multi-cylinder engines each cylinder may have its own auxiliary pump g ; or a pump may draw from one cylinder and deliver to another. In another arrangement for a four cylinder engine only two pumps are used each pump drawing from two cylinders and delivering to two. The fuel pumps may be similarly cross-connected.
