Abstract

1,020,409. Opposed cylinder I.C. engines; I.C. engine valves; fuel injectors. C. BARGERO. July 24, 1964, No. 29793/64. Heading F1B. In an opposed-cylinder I.C. engine having pistons interconnected by a first rack 4, meshing with a toothed wheel 5, a second rack 7 meshing with wheel 5 is connected to a crank-pin 11a, Fig. 3 (not shown) which is radially displaceable in the output shaft 12. The engine is started by rotation of shafts 16 or 17, the mixture being ignited on the initial stroke by spark plug 27 to cause the first working stroke of piston 3 during which exhaust port 28 is uncovered. The exhaust and scavenging stroke of piston 3 is thereby started by air flowing from pump cylinder 20 in which piston 19 has just completed the compression stroke. Air flow opens valve 22, Fig. 4 (not shown), against spring 23 and simultaneously draws fuel through nozzle 24. When valve 22 is closed, the axial bore 25 is cut off from connecting pipe 26 by movement of the stem 122 into cup 125. Check valve 124 prevents back flow of gases from cylinder 1. The compression stroke takes place until ignition either by the spark plug or by compression ignition. The stroke length of pistons 3, 3<SP>1</SP> is effected by adjustment of the crankpin 11a.
