Abstract

1447416 Reciprocating piston rotary IC engines A WIDDOWFIELD 5 Nov 1974 [8 Feb 1974] 05810/74 Heading F1B An engine has a stationary casing I with a cylindrical internal surface and contains a rotor having cylinders 6 in which pistons 7a reciprocate. The pistons 7a are all connected to a stationary shaft 10, mounted eccentrically to the casing 1 via rods 8 articulated to both the pistons 7a and the shaft 10. Rotor output is transmitted by a gear ring 13 to an output pinion 14. The pistons 7a are elongated in the axial direction of the rotor and are shorter at one side than the other to define, at outward dead centre position, combustion spaces 16 between the pistons 7a and casing 1. In the rotor, there are formed cut-outs 15 which co-operate with the combustion spaces 16. About the stationary casing are mounted (a) spark-plug(s) or diesel fuel injector(s) 3, exhaust port(s) 4 and inlet port(s) 2. The ports 2, 4 incorporate valves 17a, 17b, 18a, 18b, operated by a mechanical link with the rotor. In a further embodiment (not shown) the rotor may be polygonal with lips engaging the casing internal surface.
