Abstract

1,259,496. Oscillatory-piston internal combustion engines. C. G. HARDING. March 18, 1969 [March 27, 1968], No. 14277/69. Heading F1F. A two-stroke, oscillatory-piston I. C. engine comprises an outer case 3, Fig. 1, defining a centre cylindrical space 10 and two part-cylindrical chambers extending radially therefrom with arcuate peripheral walls 11, 12 having an axis coincident with that of the space 10, and a valve body 21 rotatable within and substantially filling the space 10 having radially projecting pistons 26 oscillatory movable within the chambers in sealing contact with the chamber walls to divide each chamber into a combustion space 27 and an induction space 28. Fuel-air mixture from, e. g. a carburettor, admitted to an inlet manifold 13 passes on oscillatory movement of the valve body via an inlet passage 25 to one or other of the induction spaces 28 whilst spent gases from one or other of the combustion spaces 27 are exhausted through an outlet passage 24 and an exhaust manifold 14. Transfer ports, shown as recesses 32 in the end walls of the case 3, but which may be alternatively formed in the arcuate walls 11, 12, transfer a charge from an induction space to a combustion space on a piston 26 nearing the end of its power stroke. Soon after, see lower piston 26 in figure, the combustion space 27 is connected to the exhaust manifold 14 and at the same time incoming gases from the fresh charge scavenges this space. Threaded holes 20 receive conventional spark-plugs. Spring-loaded seals 30 fitted in grooves in the pistons seal the pistons 26 with respect to the case and similar seals 23 in grooves in the case seal the valve body 21 with respect to the case. The oscillatory motion of the pistons is converted to continuous rotary motion by a crankshaft 18 and connecting rod 29 or other suitable mechanism. The engine may be air or watercooled. Multi-unit engines may be provided wherein a plurality of valve bodies and projecting pistons are disposed in axial alignment each within an associated casing.
