Abstract

1,187,943. Semi-rotary-piston I. C. engines. R. JAMES. March 12, 1968 [March 15, 1967], No.12051/68. Heading F1F. A two-stroke I. C. engine has pistons 35, 36, 38 that are integral with one another and oscillate within a housing 12 to effect rotation of a crankshaft 80 connected thereto by a rod 82, the piston 38 serving to pump fuel-air mixture into chambers 31, 32 defined partially by fixed partitions, or heads, 24, 25 and containing the other pistons, respectively, which produce useful power. Compressed mixture in the aforesaid chambers is ignited by spark-plugs 77, 78, grooves 68, 69, 71, 72 being formed in the outer pistons and the heads to provide combustion chambers for the ignited mixture. Fresh mixture is drawn into a chamber 29 containing the central piston through a port 47 controlled by a head 50 on said piston. After compression in the chamber 29 the mixture is transferred to one or other of the adjacent chambers through ports 52, 55, or 57, 59, and ducts (53, 58, Fig. 1, not shown), therebetween, which ports are controlled by the outer pistons. Exhaust gases escape through ports 61, 62. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, transference of the mixture is effected through ports 90, 100 controlled by valve-members 91, 102, which are either pressure actuated or actuated by the central piston. In yet another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the valve-members 91, 102 are actuated by crankshaft-driven cams (108). In a further embodiment, Fig. 9, transference of the mixture is effected through two sets of ports 125, 127 in one or both of a pair of plates 120 (121, Fig.10, not shown), fixed to the axial ends of the central piston. Transference occurs when one set of ports overlaps one of the heads 24, 25. Ports (129), or 133, may be provided in the end walls of the housing to facilitate transference through the ports 125, 127. The plate (121) may be omitted. Single ports instead of sets thereof may be provided. It is indicated that useful torque may be transmitted through a shaft 40, on which the pistons are mounted, instead of through the crankshaft.
