Abstract

1412934 Rotary IC engines TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 29 Jan 1974 [1 Feb 1973] 04190/74 Heading F1F A rotary internal combustion engine of the Wankel type comprises main and auxiliary combustion chamber depressions 10, 11 on each arcuate face 9 of the rotor 5, and main and auxiliary inlets 13, 14 for supplying lean and rich fuel/air mixtures respectively to said main and auxiliary depressions respectively. In operation, Figs. 4a to 4d (not shown), inlet 13 in the peripheral housing part 2 is first uncovered whilst inlet 14 in end wall 4 remains closed. After lean mixture from inlet 13 has been inducted mainly into depression 10, inlet 14 is uncovered to transmit rich mixture to depression 11. After both inlets are closed, compression takes place before ignition of the rich mixture in auxiliary depression 11 by spark plug 21. The ignited rich mixture then ignites the remaining lean mixture. The depressions 10, 11 can be connected by a groove in the rotor face, Fig.5 (not shown), and both ports may be in the side wall, Fig.6 (not shown), or both in the peripheral wall.
