979,429. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. K. WELM. Feb. 17, 1961 [Feb. 17, 1960], No. 6032/61. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I.C. engine comprising a cylinder G, Fig. 2, and a rotary piston 1 mounted on a central shaft 2, includes at least one sealing member mounted in the cylinder wall and resiliently urged into sealing contact with the piston to define on opposite sides of the piston a combustion chamber 4 and a cooling air chamber 4a. The chamber 4 is fitted with alternative inlet ports 13, 15 for fuel-injection or petrol-air mixture suction respectively and a spark-plug 16 and the chamber 4a with an air inlet port 3. As shown in Fig. 2, a spring-urged, pivoted sealing member 5, fitted with spring-urged sealing strips 20, 21 engageable with the piston 1 and a cylinder recess R respectively and other sealing strips (not shown) with the cylinder end walls is retractable into the recess R. In operation, the surface area of the piston 1 on which the combustion gases act after ignition, progressively increases until the exhaust port 17 is opened. After the closure of the port 3 by the piston, the pressure in the chamber 4a increases sufficiently to urge the sealing member 5 against its spring away from the piston to permit cooling air into the combusion chamber. A second sealing member 5<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, oppositely handed to the sealing member 5 may be fitted to define a compression chamber between itself and the piston. In another embodiment, the pivotally-mounted sealing member 5 is replaced by a spring-loaded strip reciprocable in a slot-like recess in the cylinder. A plurality of pistons mounted on a common shaft may be angularly disposed with respect to each other and rotate in separate side-by-side cylinders.
