Abstract

624,810. Four-stroke engines. RICARDO, H. R. June 23, 1947, No. 16500. [Classes 7 (ii). and 7 (vi)] In a compression-ignition four-stroke engine in which a pump cylinder C2 is arranged between a pair of working cylinders C, C<SP>1</SP> having inlet and exhaust poppet valves H<SP>1</SP>, H3, the valves H<SP>1</SP> also acting as delivery valves for the pump cylinder, and the pistons being connected to cranks angularly disposed at 180 degrees the pump inlet valve comprises a sliding sleeve valve D<SP>4</SP> open internally to the atmosphere and reciprocated by a bell-crank from an eccentric on the cam shaft E. The displacement of the pump piston is between 1.5 and 2.5 that of either working piston, and the combustion chamber is constructed as described in Specifications 431,345, 439,426 and 457,491.
