Abstract

1, 093, 496. Two-stroke engines; balancing. T.W. BUNYAN. Aug. 12, 1964 [Aug. 12, 1963], No.31733/63. Headings F1B and F1M. A two-stroke engine with a pump space below the piston has the lower end of the cylinder closed by a plug 7 through which the piston rod passes the piston and plug having complementary flared surfaces 8, 8'. The cylinder has a combined inlet and transfer port 3 controlled by a rotary disc valve 12, a second transfer port 5 diametrically opposite thereto, and an exhaust port 4, the valve 12 opening the port 3 to the intake manifold 14 only when the piston is on its upstroke. The surfaces 8, 8', are formed as sections of a cylinder and a skirt 18a covers the exhaust port 4 on the piston upstroke. In a modification the surfaces 8, 8', are funnel-shaped. In a swashplate engine, Fig. 4, the intake passages 15 are controlled by a rotary valve 28 on the drive shaft which also forms a balancing mechanism for the shaft.
