Abstract

1,018,434. Reciprocating pumps; free-piston engines. A. PHILLIPS. March 5, 1963 [May 4, 1962 and Feb. 25, 1963], No. 8801/63. Headings F1A and F1B. A free-piston two-stroke, I.C. engine-actuated pump comprises pump pistons 43, Fig. 1, connected to bounce pistons 7 slidable within opposed engine pistons 2 and 3. A spring 26 effects the return stroke of pistons 7 and 43, this stroke being limited by engagement of a piston flange 27 with a shoulder 28. The inlet and delivery lines 11, 12 have check valves, and delivery is effected via an accumulator. The pump cylinders 10 may be interconnected by a small bore balance tube. A leakage-collecting groove 51 is provided in each cylinder 10. The engine throttle may be operated in conjunction with a control valve on the utility point taking liquid from the pump. The engine pistons have rings 15 carrying projecting lugs 17, 18, which are interconnected for synchronizing by rack and pinion, pitman arms or by a metal band running over pulleys. A cooling jacket 20 surrounds the combustion chamber. The engine may have spark or compression ignition and carburettor or fuel injection. A supercharger 132 (Fig. 2, not shown), is driven by an exhaust-driven turbine 130. Air losses from bounce chamber 41 are made up via check valve 30 in piston 7. Lubrication is effected via pipe 36. In another embodiment, the bounce pistons are of reduced area and the engine pistons have return springs, a buffer spring being provided between each bounce piston and its engine piston. The bounce piston may control a port in its cylinder for admission of make-up air. In a further embodiment, (Fig. 8, not shown), engine piston 2 has a piston face 150 working in a bounce chamber 161 which also houses a spring-loaded bounce piston 160 coupled to pump piston 43. Chamber 161 is connected through ports 170 to atmosphere, or to the supercharged induction system, at the top of each stroke. In another embodiment, bounce piston 160 is returned by a plurality of springs of adjustable compression. For starting, latch means are provided for holding the engine pistons at their outward positions. Compressed air is then fed to the bounce chambers and to the supercharger turbine.
