Abstract

1383016 Two-stroke engines T K TONNESSEN 10 May 1972 [3 June 1971] 21859/72 Heading F1B Air drawn into the combustion cylinder 12 below the piston 52 through valves 62 on the compression stroke is displaced on the power stroke into a chamber 16 having a piston 70 subject on its upper surface to the air pressure in a manifold 76. On the compression stroke of the piston 52, the piston 70 is moved upwardly by a member 78 to draw air into the chamber 16 through the valves 88. When the piston 52 uncovers the ports 60 the piston 70 displaces air from the chamber 16 into the cylinder 12 and exhaust gases are discharged through the valves 56. A conduit 90 connecting the cylinder 12 and chamber 16 has a valve 92 for regulating the pressure acting above the piston 70 in accordance with engine load. The piston 70 and member 78 are shaped to provide an impact cushioning air cushion therebetween. The chamber (16a), Fig.3 (not shown), receiving air from beneath the working piston (52a) may be annular and surround the combustion cylinder (12a). The cylinder 12 has a fuel injector 58 and the air drawn through the valves 62 and 88 may be from a source of cooled and/or filtered air.
