Abstract

1407207 Four-stroke engines TERRYTUNE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 28 Sept 1972 [28 Sept 1971] 45238/71 Heading F1B In a spark-ignition engine having a single inlet valve 5 and a single exhaust valve 6 for each cylinder, the area of the exhaust valve of each cylinder is at least 7% greater than that of inlet valve. An engine having exhaust valves which are smaller than the inlet valves may be modified by the provision of a replacement cylinder head in which the exhaust valves are of a larger diameter than the inlet valves which are equal in diameter to those in the original head. The exhaust valve area may be from 15 to 65% greater than the inlet valve area. The engine compression ratio may be in the range 7:1 to 11:1 and the compression ratio may be reduced by machining the piston crown. A larger carburetter may be used with the replacement cylinder head. The Specification discloses numerical examples of exhaust and inlet valve diameters in original and replacement cylinder heads.
