Class 7(ii) In an internal combustion engine in which an inlet valve 3 and an exhaust valve 4 are disposed in a cylinder head 2 which forms, with a piston 1 having an unsymmetrical projection 7, a combustion chamber comprising a cold zone 5<SP>1</SP> of small height opposite the valve 3 and a larger hot zone 5<SP>11</SP> opposite the valve 4, a sparking plug being disposed in the hot zone, the axes of the valves are in a common plane which is an axial plane of the cylinder, the heads of the valves are immediately adjacent one another, and the sum of their diameters is substantially equal to the diameter of the cylinder, the total volume of the combustion chamber when the piston is at inner dead centre is such that the compression ratio is equal to or greater than seven, and the ignition has a considerable lead, e.g. an angle of 40 degrees for an engine speed of about 3,000 revolutions per minute. To improve turbulence, the cylinder head and the piston projection may be given a width smaller than the diameter of the engine cylinder, in a plane at right angles to that containing the axes of the valves, Fig. 3 (not shown).
