Abstract

1287765 I C engine combustion chambers BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE A G 7 Oct 1969 [8 Oct 1968J 49169/69 Addition to 1098796 Heading F1B The inlet and exhaust valve 2, 3 are accomodated in part-spherical zones 9, 10 of the combustion chamber each centred on the respective valve axis and the part spherical zones merge into cylindrical portions 11, 12 approximately in the respective planes perpendicular to the valve axes in which the end faces of the respective valve heads are located at maximum opening. The sparking plug 8 is located in a part-spherical combustion chamber zone 6 which extends from the valve seats to the base of the cylinder head 1. The piston 15 has a raised portion 16 which in the piston top dead centre position, co-operates with the cylinder head to reduce the volume of the combustion chamber on the side remote from the plug 8 and provide a squash zone 17.
