Abstract

Heading F1B In an overhead cam-shaft Otto-cycle engine receiving fuel mixture through each inlet passage 12, Fig. 1, in a manner producing swirl within the associated cylinder, the combustion space is formed by a cylindrical cavity 10 within the piston crown and by a portion 11 of a part-spherical cavity 2 formed in the cylinder head 1. Moreover, in a section taken in a central vertical plane containing the spark plug, Fig. 2 (not shown) the cavity 10 decreases in depth across its width towards the spark plug which is arranged adjacent the circumference of the cavity 10. This produces an acceleration of the mixture at the position of the spark plug. The inlet and exhaust valves may be dished as shown. The valves may be sunk into the cylinder head, or they may co-operate with suitable depressions in the piston crown. The engine may comprise two overhead cam-shafts.
