Abstract
1,242,594. Cylinders. A. FUNICIELLO. Nov.13, 1968 [Nov.24, 1967], No.53723/68. Heading F1B. In a two or four-stroke I.C. engine, a cylinder provided with at least one combustion zone and at least one squish zone formed between the piston crown and the cylinder head, has at least two ignition means. In the embodiment shown an engine cylinder having at least two valves (not shown) has two combustion zones 16, 17 and two spark plugs 8, 9. After ignition, combustion is completed in the smaller zone 17 before it is completed in the larger zone 16. The resulting higher pressure in the zone 17 before completion of combustion in zone 16, forces unburnt mixture trapped in the squish zone into the zone 16 for combustion thereof. In an alternative arrangement in which the combustion zones 16, 17 are of the same or different volume, the ignition is advanced in one of the combustion zones to provide the differential combustion. In other arrangements there are more than two combustion zones, or only one combustion zone. In the latter case one of the spark plugs is located at the combustion zone and the other is located at a portion of the squish zone and is arranged to spark in advance of the combustion-zone sparkplug. The combustion zone spark-plug can be located in the combustion zone or at the edge of the squish zone adjacent the combustion zone.
