Abstract

1517117 I C engine combustion chambers FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 2 July 1976 27610/76 Heading F1B In an I.C. engine, a ridge 26 on the piston crown co-operates with a step 24 on the cylinder head to divide the combustion chamber into sub-chambers 28, 30 at and near t.d.c., the sub-chamber 30 being of smaller volume than the sub-chamber 28 so that charge is forced through a gap 32 between ridge 26 and step 24 into sub-chamber 28 to cause turbulence therein. The face of ridge 26 within subchamber 28 is concave as shown in Fig. 3. In the case of spark ignition engines, combustion may be initiated in sub-chamber 28, i.e. by spark-plug 34, spreading subsequently to sub-chamber 30, the turbulence in sub-chamber 28 enabling a lean mixture to be used. If combustion is initiated in chamber 30, i.e. by spark-plug 36, initial combustion is moderate while the sub-chambers are separate, spreading rapidly through the turbulent charge within sub-chamber 28 when the chambers are open to each other, the mixture being within a range from stoichiometric to moderately lean. Fuel may be directed towards sub-chamber 30 by injector 38 giving a rich mixture within this subchamber for initial ignition by spark-plug 36 and a lean main charge in sub-chamber 28. The commencement time of fuel injection may be variable to give an injection period proportional to load, intake air being unthrottled. Alternatively, the air supply may be throttled and the fuel injection period varied in accordance with air-flow. In the case of a compression ignition engine, fuel is injected into chamber 28 near t.d.c.
