Abstract
1,156,821. Compression ignition engines. E.E. CHATTERTON. Nov.25, 1966 [Feb.17, 1966], No.7106/66. Heading F1B. A projection 20 enters a corresponding recess 21 near top dead centre to produce ignition in the charge trapped in the recess 21. The fuel may be fed by a carburetter 16 or by an injection nozzle situated in the intake manifold or cylinder. In Fig. 3 an adjustable piston 29 varies the compression ratio produced in the space 21. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the projection 20 is provided with passages (20B), 20C), closed after a predetermined travel of the projection 20 into the recess 21. The projection may alternatively be formed on the cylinder head and the recess in the piston.
