Abstract
1,146,589. Fuel injection engines. BLACKSTONE & CO. Ltd. April 1, 1966 [May 17, 1965], No.20724/65. Heading F1B. A piston is formed with an annular recess 44 between a projector 45 and an annular ring 46. At top dead centre the piston crown forms with a part-spherical cylinder head surface a toroidal chamber, the outer curved edge of ridge 46 forcing air inwardly towards the recess 44. Fuel is injected from a central injector 22 into the recess 44. The inlet and exhaust valves 15, 16 Fig.2 are inclined and the piston head is formed with recesses 47 opposite thereto. The centre lines of the inlet and exhaust passages 27, 28 are tangential to the centre line of the recess 44 so that the supercharged entering air forms a swirl around the cylinder axis which persists during compression and expansion and facilitates exhaust. The gudgeon pins 14 are retained by C-shaped springs (39) Fig. 5 (not shown). The exhaust remains open for a short period during the intake stroke for scavenging.
