A ridge 87 on the piston divides the combustion space at top dead centre into an ignition chamber 86, containing spark plug 18, and a main chamber 90. A variable quantity injector 84 injects during the intake stroke or beginning of compression stroke to form a lean mixture in space 90 and a constant quantity ejecter 85 produces a richer mixture in chamber 86 at top dead centre.
