Abstract
PURPOSE: To greatly facilitate the ignition and combustion of a thin mixture based on torch flames injected from an accessory combustion chamber into a main combustion chamber, by the multiplying action of spark plugs provided at prescribed positions in the main combustion chamber and squish areas defined at the peripheral part of the main combustion chamber.
CONSTITUTION: In a cylinder head 2, an accessory chamber cup 10 is fitted in a hole 11 at an eccentric position in a main combustion chamber 5. The electrode 14 of the first spark plug 13 is inserted into an accessory combustion chamber 12 in the cup 10. A large, a medium and a small torch holes 17W19, for example, are opened in the almost hemispherical head 15 of the accessory chamber cup 10. Squish areas 28W30 are defined between an intake valve 7 and an exhaust valve 9, between the intake valve 7 and the accessory chamber cup 15 and between the exhaust valve 9 and the cup 15 so that the areas are opposed to the top of a piston 3. The second spark plug 32 is installed in the main combustion chamber 5 near the inlet part 24 of the squish area 28 between the intake valve 7 and the exhaust valve 9.
