Abstract

PURPOSE: To cause the combustion of a thin mixture, by providing an accessory chamber integrally with a spark plug, placing a thick mixture in the accessory chamber and igniting the thick mixture.
CONSTITUTION: In the stroke of suction, an intake valve 21 is moved down so that a thin mixture flows into a main chamber 18 through the valve 21. The thin mixture is also supplied into an accessory chamber 7 through a communication hole 8. At the same time, fuel is injected from a fuel injection valve 22 into the accessory chamber 7 and the vicinity thereof. After that, the intake valve 21 is closed, a piston 17 is moved up and the stroke of compression is started. The fuel injected into the accessory chamber 7 and the vicinity thereof is evaporated into the thin mixture to produce a thick mixture. When sparks are generated between the central electrode 10 and grounded electrode 9 of a spark plug 2, the thick mixture in the accessory chamber 7 is burned and exploded first to cause the combustion of the thin mixture in the main chamber 18.
