Abstract
PURPOSE: To raise scavenging and turbulence and improve ignitability in a sub- combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, by opening a communication opening for the main combustion chamber and the sub-combustion chamber at the recess provided in the main combustion chamger and introducing much air-fuel mixture of the main combustion chamber into the sub-combustion chamber.
CONSTITUTION: A sub-combustion chamger cup 10 consists of a substantially half spherical head section 15 projecting into a main combustion chamber 5 and a cylindrical insertion section 16 which fits closely into a fit hole 11. The head section 15 is pierced with a large diameter torch hole 17 facing the lower section of an intake valve 7, a medium diameter torch hole 18 facing towards the lower section of an exhaust valve 9, and a small diameter torch hole 19 facing towards the point almost right below the sub-combustion chamber cup 10. In the squish areas 28W30, the squish area 30 between the sub-combustion chamber cup 10 and the exhaust valve 9 is provided with a recess 31, and from this recess 31 a communication opening 32 which pierces the cylinder head 2 and the sub-combustion chamber cup 10 from the recess 31 towards the sub-combustion chamber 12 is provided.
