Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a uniform combustion of a lean mixed gas through the expansion of a torch flame by means of a protrusion provided on the top of a piston of a torch type internal combustion engine.
CONSTITUTION: This relates to a torch type internal combustion engine which incorporates a main combustion chamber 5 provided on the top of a piston 3 and a sub-combustion chamber 10 formed by a cup 8 having a torch hole 11, provided in a cylinder head 2. A pillar-shaped protrusion 12 is provided close to an exhaust valve 7 arranged on the top of the piston 3, while the hole 11 is arranged close to a suction valve 6 and in such a direction that one side of a flame jetted therethrough is brought into contact with the protrusion 12. With such an arrangement, the flame swirls around the protrusion 12 in the direction of the arrow, thus accelerating the combustion spreading rate in the chamber 5.
