Abstract
572,100. Cylinders. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I., and WALKER, E. B. April 4,1944, No. 6257. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] A combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine comprises a concave chamber 13 formed in a cylinder head 12 and a dished chamber 14 in a piston head 11, the surface area of the cylinder head chamber being sufficient to accommodate valves 25, 26 and associated members such as a nozzle 23 of a fuel injector, an ignition device or the like, and the combined depth of the cylinder head and piston head chambers is such as to allow the valves to open sufficiently when the piston is at the top of its stroke to effect adequate scavenging. The diameters of both chambers are equal but the cylinder head chamber is deeper than that in the piston head. The chamber formed in the cylinder head conforms to part of a sphere and the bottom faces of the valves are recessed at 27 and 28 so that when closed they conform with the arcuate contour of the chamber. The chamber 14 formed in the piston head is of shallow conical form. The valves are preferably set with their axes radiating from the centre of curvature of the cylinder head chamber, diametrically opposite each other and at an angle of approximately 30 degrees each side of the cylinder axis. The approximate proportional sizes of the various parts are given in the Specification.
