Abstract
546,500. Oil engines. GARDNER & SONS, Ltd., L., GARDNER, J. H. S., and GARDNER, J. K. March 12, 1941, No. 3378. [Class 7 (iii)] In a compression-ignition oil engine having the combustion chamber in the piston and the fuel injector in the cylinder head, the injector b is arranged at one side of the combustion chamber with the jet holes at the opposite side only of the injector, so as to give uniform lengths to the jets. The combustion chamber a may be of substantially oval form in plan, with the side a<SP>1</SP> at which the injector is arranged flatter than the other side a<SP>2</SP>. The axes of the injector and piston and the centroid of plan area of the combustion chamber may be in the plane of the minor axis of the oval, and the axis of the injector and the centroid of volume of the combustion chamber may be at opposite sides of the piston axis. In a modification the injector is arranged in a recess formed at the centre of the flatter side a<SP>1</SP> of the combustion chamber.
