Abstract
597,729. Combustion chambers. MORRISON, A. C. Aug. 24, 1945, No. 21771. [Class 7 (iii)] The combustion chamber of a compression ignition engine of the kind having, main and subsidiary air swirls A, A<1>, respectively, with the fuel jet J crossing arid passing through the subsidiary swirl has depressions or grooves formed in the piston crown and/or either the opposing face of a piston valve in the cylinder head or the head itself for the purpose of producing the swirls. In Figs. 1 and 2 the piston W.P. has depressions 5, 6 of tapering depth, the main air swirl A originating in the depression 5 and leading into the central depression 7, and the subsidiary swirl occurring in the depression 6 whence it passes the fuel jet 2 and combines with the main swirl. In a modification, the swirling chambers are constructed by depressions formed partly, in the piston top and partly in the head of an opposed piston valve and in another modification the depressions are formed entirely in the cylinder head:
