Abstract

379,605. Oil engines. CAPEL & CO., Ltd. and KERR, J. B., XL Engine Works, Colchester. Jan. 13, 1932, No. 1037. [Class 7 (iii).] The water-cooled cylinder head C of a compression ignition internal combustion engine is formed with a pocket-like combustion chamber G of spheroidal shape communicating throughout the engine cycle directly with the cylinder bore by a constricted main passage G<1> and by one or more subsidiary passages G<2> each having a cross section less than that of the main passage G ; the arrangement is such that by the end of the compression stroke, substantially the whole of the air charge has been forced through these passages into the chamber G and an injector H in the wall thereof delivers fuel directly to the charge therein. As shown, the part of the charge forced into the chamber through the main port G enters it tangentially to produce a whirling motion rendered turbulent by the parts of the charge entering through the non- tangential subsidiary channels G<1>, but the main passage may be disposed non-tangentially. The inner ends of the subsidiary passages lie on opposite sides of and equidistant from the inner end of the main passage, the passages being opposite to the injector which delivers the fuel in a jet the axis of which passes through or adjacent to the centre of volume of the chamber.
