Abstract

493,702. Oil engines. RICARDO, H. R. April 8, 1937, No. 10039. [Class 7 (iii)] In an engine having a combustion chamber which communicates with the cylinder space through a tangential passage D in a heatinsulated plug C, the distance between the nozzle G of the fuel injector and the point where the axis of the fuel jet meets the combustion chamber wall is increased by forming the chamber as an elongated sphere. As shown, the chamber has two hemispherical portions A, B spaced by a short cylinder H or other figure of revolution about the axis X-X. The axis of the fuel jet is either parallel to but not coincident with, or at a small angle to the axis of the elongated chamber. The chamber may contain not more than 50 per cent of the total volume of the combustion space at the end of the compression stroke, the remainder of the combustion space being constituted by the passage D and the clearance between the piston E<1> and the cylinder head this clearance being increased by the recess E adjacent the passage D.
