Abstract

503,201. Oil engines. WALKER, E. B. Sept. 30,1937, No. 26509. [Class 7 (iii)] At the end of the compression stroke fuel is injected along a diverging passage 2 into a chamber 1 of circular cross-section, one part of the passage wall entering the chamber tangentially while the opposite part forms a lip 3. As shown in Fig. 5, the chamber 1 tapers away from the passage 2 and is approximately the same width as the passage where the two join. The chamber is formed mainly in the piston with the lip in the cylinder head. If the air is set in rotation by using a masked inlet valve, the chamber is offset from the cylinder axis away from the side on which the valve is located. In a modified construction the fuel nozzle is coaxial with the passage.
