Abstract

476,356. Cylinders. DUFOUR, L Feb. 15, 1937, No. 4422. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1936. [Class 7 (ii)] In a two-stroke spark. ignition engine having pis. ton-controlled ports and a combustion chamber in the cylinder head shaped to receive a projection on the piston, the wall of the chamber beginning at that side of the cylinder along which the charge enters is constructed as a spiral 18 leading into a substantially cylindrical pocket 9<1>, the lower surface of which is connected to the opposite side of the cylinder wall by a convex surface 15, the diameter of the pocket being approximately between one-third and one-quarter of the cylinder diameter, and the pocket being so displaced with respect to the cylinder axis towards the said opposite side of the cylinder that the top of the piston, forming a deflector to direct the charge along the cylinder wall, remains laterally of the pocket when the piston is at the end of the compression stroke, so that the deflector does not disturb the whirling movement, produced by the entering charge, in the combustion chamber. The piston has a curved surface 16 parallel to the curved surface 15 in the cylinder head and when compression takes place, the gases in the channel between the surfaces 15 and 16 are forced into the cylindrical chamber and assist the whirling movement. In a modification, inlet ports are arranged on the same side of the cylinder as the exhaust port, and the piston has a curved surface parallel to the spiral surface 18 in the cylinder head, which at compression forms a channel analogous to that between the surfaces 15 and 16.
