Abstract
249,622. Harris, W. H. Jan. 10, 1925. Two- and fourstrokecycle engines; cylinders, cooling. - A double-acting engine comprises a hollow piston b, b<2> working in a cylinder a, a<1> and over a fixed head, c anchored to the crank case d<1> by four hollow members c<1> which are preferably of bronze or rustless steel and serve to circulate cooling water through the head. The lower end b<2> of the piston which may be detachable from the upper part, is of flared or coned formation and carries the gudgeon d. The primary explosion chamber f located between the piston and the top of the cylinder, is provided with inlet and exhaust ports f<1>, f<2> in the cylinder wall. The secondary explosion chamber located between the piston and the head c is provided with inlet and. exhaust ports g<1>, g<2> and with complimentary ports b<4>, b<5> in the lower wall of the piston b. If the engine works on the Diesel principle, air under pressure is supplied to the ports f<1>, g<1> and fuel is injected through mechanically controlled valves h. j. The engine may work with a gaseous charge and also on the four-stroke cycle and the annular space e may serve to provide a supercharge of air. One or more of the hollow members c<1> may convey fuel to the secondary combustion chamber g as at c<2>.
