[Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii).] Air or combustible mixture from an annular chamber c passes through ports d controlled by a reciprocating piston valve a, coaxial with the working piston b, to a combustion chamber connected to the cylinder n by a throat l formed with helical grooves which whirl the charge entering the combustion chamber from the cylinder. The combustion chamber is spherical and its upper half is formed in the piston valve a to reduce the overall height of the engine. A sparking-plug i or an injection nozzle o is mounted in the thickest portion of the cylinder head adjacent the throat, and the former operates in a passage k byepassing the throat, while the latter is disposed tangentially to the combustion chamber.
