Abstract
722,168. Two-stroke engines. AUTO UNION GES. Nov. 19, 1952 [Nov. 20, 1951], No. 29239/52. Class 7 (2). A double-acting charging pump 17 mounted on the crankcase of a two-stroke crankcasecompression engine at between 30 degrees and 90 degrees (as shown, 75 degrees) to the engine cylinder 10, with its stroke retarded relative to the engine stroke, has its lower and upper ends delivering to the crankcase directly and via grooves 19 respectively. Charge is induced into the upper pump end through either a port 22 or automatically acting valvular means in the cover 18 and, from the same or a different source, directly into the crankcase through a port 21, the combined charge passing to the cylinder 10 via transfer ducts leading to ports 23. The ports 21, 22 may respectively supply air and rich mixture or vice versa, and the engine and pump cylinders may have equal or differing volumes. The pump 17 continues crankcase compression until the ports 23 close. The upper edges of the ports 23 may be higher up the cylinder 10 than the upper edge of an exhaust port 24. Spark or compression ignition may be used.
