733,928. Compression-ignition engines. STANWELL, P. Sept. 11, 1953 [Nov. 12, 1952 ; May 1, 1953], Nos. 20242/52 and 12066/53. Class 7(2). In a compression-ignition engine liquid fuel and air are introduced into the cylinder 1, the fuel being insufficiently divided for compression-ignition within the normal range of compression ratios, and a portion at least of the introduced fuel is brought within the cylinder to a sufficient state of sub-division to ensure compression-ignition within the normal range of compression ratios. On the compression stroke fuel and air are drawn into the crankcase through a carburetter 7, for example, the mixture being compressed during the working stroke and then directed via a transfer passage 3 into the cylinder 1 to both scavenge and charge the latter. The piston 2 is provided with a centrally disposed protrusion 9 that at T.D.C. is adapted to enter a combustion chamber 10, the head 11 of which is adjustable to vary the volume of the chamber. A clearance 13 is provided between the protrusion 9 and the side walls of chamber 9 through which some of the mixture is forced into the chamber 9 by the rising piston thereby sub-dividing the fuel so that it readily ignites therein by compression. The piston protrusion may be ribbed.
