Abstract

722,044. Cycles ; cylinders. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. April 18, 1952 [April 20, 1951], No. 9818/52. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (3). In two-stroke (as shown) and four-stroke engines in which a fuel/air mixture is compressed before ignition, weak fuel/air mixture is fed to a cylinder 1, as through an inlet valve 5 controlling a compressor-fed air conduit 4 supplied with vaporized fuel through a control valve 7, rich fuel/air mixture is formed in a pre-combustion chamber 3, having a volume between 15 per cent. and 35 per cent. of the total clearance volume, by fuel injection thereinto as from a low-pressure diaphragm pump 14 supplied through a control valve 11, and ignition means such as a sparking plug 8 is disposed within the chamber 3. The fuel content of the weak mixture at full load is less than 80 per cent. of that of a stoichiometric mixture ; injection into the chamber 3, which occurs within the first half of the compression stroke, provides a substantially stoichiometric mixture therein, between 15 per cent. and 35 per cent. of the total fuel consumed at full load being used in forming the rich mixture. Fuel control at partial loads is effected mainly or wholly by the valve 7, with or without air control by a throttle valve in the conduit 4. In Fig. 2 (not shown) exhaust ports 13 are replaced by a cylinder head exhaust valve and crankcase compression of the weak mixture is employed, injection into the chamber 3 occurring as soon as piston-controlled transfer ports in the cylinder 1 are closed.
