Abstract

511,596. Cylinders ; oil engines ; regulating. DRAGOS, T. Nov. 17, 1937, No. 31680. Void. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1936. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii) and 7 (vi)] In a compression-ignition engine, cylinder compression pressure is kept constant by an auxiliary stepped piston 22 which is loaded by cylinder gases, tapped through a valve 23 kept seated by a light spring 24. A plunger 25 loaded by a heavy spring 27 closes the valve 23 when the requisite pressure is reached. A safety valve 33 is also provided, and air admitted through a port 21 cushions the return stroke of the piston 22. In the two-stroke engine shown, in addition to the normal scavenging and exhaust ports 15, 16, a further port controlled by a valve 18 operated by the engine and regulated by the governor allows supercharging or rejection of part of the charge, which may be combustible mixture or air. In an oil engine, liquid fuel is injected through an injector 6 by a pump, the plunger of which is directly operated by the crosshead 10. In place of the restricted combustion chamber 4, an annular extension of the piston having tangential ports may enter an extension of the bore in which the auxiliary piston slides to form a flat combustion chamber into which the fuel is sprayed by radial orifices.
