Abstract

389,693. Starting Diesel engines. HEYWOOD, C. F., 4, Rue de l'Eglise Catholique, Montreux, Switzerland. June 17, 1932, No. 17179. Convention date, June 26, 1931. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (v).] In a method of starting Diesel engines in which a fluid under pressure is supplied to the working cylinders in turn during the power stroke of the pistons, a supplementary charge of the same and/or another fluid is injected into each cylinder at or subsequent to the moment when the piston therein has almost completed its compression stroke, in order to assist in the ignition of the normal heavy fuel injected into the cylinder. The fluid under pressure may be compressed air, carbon dioxide, or other gas. The supplementary charge may be a small quantity of the same fluid, injected shortly before the end of the compression stroke, or may comprise a small quantity of a light fuel such as benzine or petrol, with or without air or other gas or another fuel, the charge preferably being injected during the working stroke. In order to avoid heavy explosions, the starting fuel or mixture is preferably mixed with heavy oils or carbon dioxide to retard combustion and raise the ignition temperature. The opening of the exhaust valve is preferably delayed by known means during starting. The supplementary charge may be injected or controlled by a supplementary pump or by a rotarydisc distributer valve 1 for the main starting- fluid. The valve 1 is fixed on a conical part 2 of a shaft 3 driven at the cam-shaft speed of the engine. The valve casing comprises a chamber 11 to which compressed gas is admitted by a port 13, and a chamber 14 supplied with fuel through a pipe 16, the chambers being in communication by means of a port 15 in the partition between them. The fuel is led by a channel 17 to a nozzle 18 opening into a bore 19 in the part 2, from which radial bores 20 lead to an annular channel 21 and a port 4 in the valve 1. Ports 7, 9, &c. in the valve seat 6, leading to individual cylinders of the engine, coact with an elongated port 22 in the valve to admit compressed gas from the chamber 15, and radial extensions 7<1>, 9<1>, &c. of the ports 7, 9, &c. coact with the port 4 to admit the supplementary charge from the nozzle 18 and bore 19. In a modification, for injecting a supplementary charge of air without fuel, the chamber 14 is omitted and the valve 1 has an opening 22 and a second opening running over the ports, 7, 9, &c.
