Abstract

21,081. Griesbach, H. S. Sept. 18. Carburctting-apparatus; cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In the engine shown in Fig. 1, liquid or gaseous fuel is conveyed through a passage F to ports G in a cylindrical valve D which slides between a head A<1> on the cylinder and an outer cover C. At the end of the compression stroke the ports G place the main combustion space R in communication with an annular chamber H into which air is compressed by the working piston during the compression stroke. The air stored in the chamber H is at a lower pressure than the final compression pressure, and when the ports G register with the annular chamber the fuel is driven into the chamber and ignites, ignition being effected either by the heat of the uncooled head C or by other means. The valve D may be actuated by a sliding cam. According to modified constructions, (1) the fuel is admitted directly to the annular chamber H the valve D serving to place the chamber in communication with the main combustion space at appropriate points in the cycle; (2) the annular chamber H is dispensed with, the fuel being injected through the passage F into gaseous products remaining in the ports G from the combustion in the cylinder; and (3) fuel is admitted directly to the annular chamber H to which air from the cylinder is admitted later, the air admission being controlled by the sleeve valve which places the chamber H in communication with the working cylinder. In this modification, combustion may commence in the annular chamber before it is opened to the working cylinder.
