Abstract

6233. Pratt, J. T., [Assignee of Suplee, H. H.]. April 28, 1914, [Convention date]. Four-stroke-cycle engines. - Liquid fuel is injected into an air charge in a small cylinder and ignited by the heat of compression, the resulting gases being expanded into a larger cylinder containing air. Fig. 2 shows one of two pairs of co-axial cylinders of an engine having pistons connected to oppositely - disposed cranks. A charge of air is drawn into the small cylinder A on the suction stroke, and the liquid fuel is injected during the compression stroke. The charge is ignited by the heat of compression, and at the end of the second outstroke, the resulting gases expand into air in a cylinder D of the other pair, in which the piston is about to commence its down-stroke. Communication between a firing cylinder and an expansion cylinder is established through a valve c when the pressure in the two cylinders are approximately equal.
