Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the thermal efficiency of an engine, by actuating two pistons in one continuous cylinder. CONSTITUTION:In a four-cycle tandem one cylinder-two piston engine performing successive operations of suction, compression, combusion and exhaust which are similar to those of conventional engines, two pistons 2 are disposed opposed together in one cylinder 1, and therefore, they compress a mixture from an intake valve 4, thrusting the mixture against each other. The mixture is ignited by an ignition plug 4 in the vicinity of the top dead center of compression cycle so that both pistons 2 are depressed. Further, an exhaust valve 5 is opened, and then the exhaust, suction, compression and combustion are repeated. This arrangement may be similarly applied to a two cycle tandem engine. With this arrangement, the structure of the engine may be simplified, and as well the compression ratio may enhanced so that the thermal efficiency may be heightened. The application to a Diesel engine allows the engine to suitably reduce its vibration.
