Abstract

20,700. Croft, J., Broadway, B. J., Broadway, W. L., and Broadway, J. B. Sept. 18. Gas and explosive-vapour engines.-In the twostroke-cycle engine shown in Fig. 2, combustible charges are drawn into the crank chamber C and enter the cylinder through the port D when the piston reaches the end of its out-stroke. The power of the engine may be reduced by opening the valve e<1> during the compression stroke, and allowing part of the charge to be forced back into the crank chamber through the pipe E. The exhaust passage F, which communicates with the exhaust port G, Fig. 4, is provided with a valvecontrolled pipe H which transfers water vapour, present in the combustion products, from the exhaust pipe to the pump inlet D during the up-stroke of the piston B. The water vapour enters the cylinder prior to the main charge and tends to prevent pre-ignition. A modification is shown in Fig. 5, in which a flexiblechamber pump J is used for drawing in and expelling the charge. The pump draws in its charge through a port L in the piston. The motor may be used on road vehicles and velocipedes.
