Abstract

25,736. Hazzlewood, J. Nov. 9. [Cognate Application, 28,562/12.] Four-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, varying clearance of. - Compression is reduced to a minimum, at starting, and is increased automatically during normal working by a supplementary piston mounted in the cylinder head. In the four-stroke-cycle engine shown in Fig. 1, a loose piston 8 carries a plunger 9<x> having a central channel 9<y> by means of which an air compression chamber 10 is placed in communication with a space 15 behind the piston. At starting, a valve 16 opens the space 15 to the atmosphere, and the piston 8 is then free to occupy its highest position during the compression strokes. During normal working, the valve 16 is closed and air is drawn into and compressed in the chamber 10 by the action of the varying pressures on the underside of the piston 8, the air being transferred to and stored in the space 15. The piston 8 approaches the working piston at the end of each exhaust stroke and facilitates the expulsion of the exhaust gases. According to a modified construction, the plunger 9<X> is dispensed with, exhaust gases from the combustion space being admitted behind the supplementary piston.
