Abstract
15,443. Roussat, J. July 28, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Gas or explosive-vapour engines.-Consists chiefly in means for supplying the oil to and scavenging the cylinder of a twostroke-cycle engine. The main cylinder a is jacketed by a brass ribbed casing a' and in it works the main piston c, which is connected by a rod e to a pump piston working in an inner cylinder. Air is admitted to the underside of the piston c through passages k, and to the crank chamber b through the valve y. The supply of air to the main cylinder is controlled by a spring-loaded valve x. The air supply to the cylinder is controlled by the cam-actuated valve m, which when raised operates the oil-supply device. Oil is supplied by a coil h in the cylinder cover 15 which is cup-shaped and has itself a cover 16 which when removed allows alcohol to be poured over the coil to heat it at starting. A continuation r of the coil h leads the oil to a nozzle s, whence it passes through holes in the fixed portion 19, Fig. 5, and tube 20 to the space p between the piston q and a valve 6 connected thereto. This space can be adjusted by the screw 21. A helical spring under the valve 6 keeps the tube 20 normally in its lowest position. On the up-stroke of the piston c, air is drawn through the passages k and the valve y. On the downstroke, this air is compressed and just as the piston c is uncovering the exhaust ports i, a flushing-charge of air is delivered from the crank casing through the pipe v and nozzle u. Immediately after, the valve m is raised by the cam 3 and a charge of air compressed by the piston c is sent through the passage l and gauze n and carries with it into the cylinder a charge of oil from the nozzle o', which oil has been stored in the space p. The nozzle o<1> is closed normally by the valve 6, but is opened when the valve m opens, owing to the projection 18 lifting the tube 20. Another part of the projection 18 closes the nozzle u. A sparking-plug g serves to ignite the mixture.
